Caring for your Mouth

At Blairgowrie Dental care we have four fully trained and highly experienced hygienists – Michelle Taylor, Gail McIntyre, Nikki Muir and Jo Shepherd. Along with your dentist, our hygienists will work with you to develop an oral hygiene routine which will give you a happy and healthy mouth.

Here are a few handy hints to help impress your hygienist and dentist at your dental appointments –

We recommend that you:

  • brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Children up to three years old should use a toothpaste with a fluoride level of at least 1000ppm (parts per million). Three-year-olds to adults should use a toothpaste that contains 1350ppm to 1500ppm of fluoride.
  • clean in between your teeth with 'interdental' brushes or floss - brushing alone only cleans up to about 60 percent of the surface of your teeth.

However even the ‘Best Brusher’ has areas that they miss. Regular dental hygienist appointments are required to remove the plaque and tartar in those harder to reach places preventing cavities, inflammation, and gum disease.

If you have any questions or concerns about your mouth please speak to your dentist or hygienist.

Tooth Whitening
BEFORE AFTER
Before Teeth Whitening Results after teeth whitening

Your teeth naturally pick up stain throughout the day with smoking, tea, coffee and red wine darkening your teeth quicker. Tooth whitening is a safe and effective way of lightening your smile to a bright, white colour whilst not damaging your teeth.

At Blairgowrie Dental Care we offer ‘At home whitening’ which is one of the simplest and easiest to use whitening systems available. We construct custom made mouth guards into which a whitening gel is placed. These are then worn overnight or for short periods during the day depending upon what suits your lifestyle.

Everyone’s teeth whiten at different speeds but most people achieve a shade they are happy with after approximately 2 weeks. We will guide you through the whole process and be available to answer any questions you may have. We normally recommend a clean and polish with one of our hygienists before starting your treatment.

Crowns, bridges, veneers and fillings do not lighten in the same way as natural teeth. Your dentist will discuss this with you before your treatment begins and explain what can be done to improve the appearance of these teeth.

After whitening, your natural tooth colour will gradually return over time but you can maintain your desired shade by buying ‘top ups’ of whitening gel inexpensively from Blairgowrie Dental Care.

We currently offer tooth whitening for £239

Crowns Bridges Veneers

A crown is an artificial covering or ‘cap’ placed over the top of your own tooth. They can be made of a combination of metal and ceramic or entirely of ceramic. Crowns are used for a number of reasons – when teeth are broken, badly stained or have large fillings. They can also be used to fill in gaps where teeth are missing by making a bridge.

A bridge can be used to replace missing teeth in certain situations. The tooth (or teeth) beside the gap is used to hold in the replacement tooth. This is done by placing a crown or a small metal support on the back of the neighbouring tooth.

A veneer is a thin ceramic facing that can be placed over the front of a tooth (similar to a false finger nail!). Veneers are used to mask stained teeth, correct misshaped teeth to improve aesthetics and can even close small gaps in-between teeth.

Tooth Straightening

"I was thrilled - in six weeks, my teeth were completely straight. I would highly recommend my dentist and the Inman Aligner if you want a fast and effective method to straighten your teeth." T.H., Edinburgh

"It was brilliant to see how quickly the Inman Aligner was working.  It inspired me to improve other areas of my lifestyle and I started exercising regularly and have changed my skin-care routine." M.H., Fife

In the past, straightening squint/crowded front teeth would have involved extracting teeth and wearing metal 'train track' braces for 1-2 years. Some people would even have their healthy front teeth drilled down to allow for the placement of veneers or crowns ('caps') .

Thankfully, the situation has changed recently with the arrival of a new range of braces specifically designed to allow the straightening of front teeth but discreetly, without extracting teeth and quickly (normally within 3 months). At Blairgowrie Dental Care we offer a choice of either Clear Smile Aligners, Clearsmile Braces or The Inman Aligner.

Clear Smile Aligner

Clear Smile Aligners are see through, thin, plastic removable appliances which fit tight against your teeth making them very difficult to see when in place. They are kept as small as possible so as not to interfere with speaking or taste. After an assessment with one of our fully trained dentists to ensure your suitability for the treatment, 'moulds' or impressions of your teeth are taken and then sent to our specialist dental laboratory for construction of a series of Clear Smile Aligners which are changed every 1-2 weeks. The aligners are designed specifically to move your teeth into the desired position with the number of aligners required being dependent upon the amount of tooth movement required. Once in position your teeth then need to be held there so they don't move again. This is done using a thin retainer wire which is placed behind the teeth (not visible).

Clearsmile Braces

Blaigowrie Dental Care are excited to offer highly aesthetic adult orthodontic braces. ClearSmile braces use traditional techniques with new technology to reduce treatment times and improve the appearance of the brace. Dr Stewart McLean has many years of experience in providing metal “train track” braces that you see most teenagers wearing. He is now able to offer this highly aesthetic option for adult patients.

Inman Aligner

The Inman Aligner is a removable appliance which allows your front teeth to be gently guided to an ideal position in a matter of weeks. It involves only one appliance, 'The Inman Aligner' which is designed and constructed by our specialist dental laboratory to specifically move your teeth in a controlled and highly effective way.

These treatments can be carried out by all three of our principle dentists – Stewart McLean, Claire Williams and Neil Rutherford as they have all completed the training and are ‘Inman Aligner Certified’.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root which is placed in the jaw and is used to hold a crown, bridge or denture in place. The implant is made of titanium, titanium alloy or ceramics – materials which are generally well-tolerated by the human body. The dental implant is surgically inserted under local anesthetic.

Dental implants are considered the ‘gold standard’ treatment for replacing missing teeth as they do not require the preparation of any natural teeth. They are also considered the most reliable method of replacing teeth.

At Blairgowrie Dental Care we work closely with Blackhills Specialist Dental Clinic. The GDC registered, specialist, oral surgeons at Blackhills Clinic place our dental implants and we then make the crown, bridge or denture as appropriate.

Fillings

In the early stages of dental decay there are no symptoms, but your dentist may be able to spot a cavity in its early stages when they examine or x-ray your teeth. This is why you should visit your dentist regularly, as small cavities are much easier to treat than advanced decay.

There are a number of different filling materials that can be used but commonly we choose between:

  • Tooth coloured fillings
  • Amalgam/silver fillings
  • Laboratory made inlays/onlays

Root Fillings

Root Canal TreatmentRoot canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.

It is a skilled and time-consuming procedure with most courses of treatment sometimes involving two or more visits to your dentist.

The infected pulp is removed, and any abscesses can be drained.  The root canal is then cleaned and shaped and filled. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoos have become very popular over the past few years. In fact a recent study found around one fifth of all adults in the U.K. have one (even the prime minister’s wife!). Although most people love their tattoo once it’s finished, there are also those who do not and wish it to be changed or removed. The Nd:YAG laser allows for accurate removal of tattoo ink meaning that tattoos can be faded, modified or completely removed. Fading of a tattoo allows for an effective cover up tattoo to be placed which can either incorporate or block out the original.

At Blairgowrie Dental Care our three principle dentists – Neil Rutherford, Claire Williams and Stewart McLean, have been fully trained in laser tattoo removal. This has included training by a Health and Care Professions Council Scientist, testing using a British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) approved exam, on site training and practical ‘hands on’ sessions using the Nd:YAG laser. Neil is also currently a member of the BMLA. All laser treatments are carried out within the practice where we adhere to the most up to date cross infection and disinfection policies for the medical profession.

The laser works by breaking up the ink particles into small particles allowing your body to get rid it. It requires several sessions, the number being dependent upon the size of tattoo, density/type/colour of ink and patient response to the treatment. It is important to leave a sufficient amount of time (usually 6-7 weeks) between laser treatments of the same area to allow your body to clear away the ink particles.

The easiest to remove tattoos are those which have been either been done by an amateur, older tattoos and tattoos with a lower density of ink e.g. line drawings or text.

Green and yellow ink are the most difficult to remove and, depending upon how the ink has been made, may not be able to be removed. White and fluorescent inks are unfortunately impossible to remove.

When we are treating larger tattoos it is more effective to concentrate on ‘sections’ of the tattoo rather than laser the whole area. This results in quicker healing and allows the body to rid itself of the ink more effficiently.

Our laser is incredibly accurate and allows us to fade back or remove areas of ink without affecting the overall look of the tattoo. This is very uselful when adjusting larger tattoos or sleeves allowing us to remove, for example a name, and replace it with a more 'up to date' one.

The first step in the whole process is contacting our reception and arranging an appointment for a consultation. We will require a full and detailed medical history form to be completed on arrival so please bring a note of any medicines you may be taking along with you. There will be a screening to ensure you are suitable for laser tattoo removal and if this all checks out then we can begin by carrying out a 'test patch' - small area of the different coloured inks is lasered. This gives you the chance to experience the sensation of the laser and also allows us to gauge the response of the tattoo and of your skin

The test patch shown above shows a typical reaction to the laser - small white blisters. There can also sometimes be a little bleeding from the area.

DOES IT HURT? - Different people and different tattoos respond differently. Our experience in anaesthesia and pain relief from dentistry allows us to provide you with a variety of options for pain relief including numbing creams and cold packs. The majority of people do, however, manage with no anaesthesia. The procedure is very quick and we even have a T.V. on the ceiling which you can watch to take your mind off it. The best description of the sensation of the laser (without numbing cream) we have heard is -

'its like an elastic band flicking on your skin'

Some people decide that after the test patch they would like to use a numbing cream for the subsequent treatments. This can be purchased at our reception and works very well when applied 1 hour before appointments.

Aftercare following laser tattoo removal sessions is extremely important, especially if a cover up tattoo is planned. An instruction leaflet will be given to you following your treatment detailing all the do's and dont's. If you require this information please follow this link to our FAQ section and scroll to the end of the list -

COST - £25 for consultation and test patch and then £50 per treatment session.

Facial Rejuvenation

Our facial rejuvenation treatments are carried out by one of our principle dentists, Claire Williams. She trained in facial aesthetics at The Khanna Institute, London and regularly attends courses to ensure she keeps well up to date with new products and techniques.

The treatments available use either -
Botulinum Toxin which is mainly used to soften lines/wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, and to reduce frown lines.

or

Dermal Fillers which are used to rectify tissue volume loss as we age. Popular areas include cheeks, lips, smokers lines around the mouth, nose to lip lines.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers can add volume to your lips and skin, rejuvenating your appearance without affecting your natural expression. They are a crystal-clear gel form of Hyaluronic acid (H.A.), a substance that occurs naturally in the body but diminishes as we get older. H.A. holds water, hydrates and gives youthful volume to the skin. A simple injection of filler replenishes lost volume and improves your looks by enhancing your facial profile, creating fuller lips and smoothing out lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum Toxin

Every time you smile or frown you set off a series of muscle contractions in your face. As these muscles expand and contract they crease you skin with an unflattering pattern of lines including frown lines, forehead lines and lines around the eyes (‘crows feet’). As we age our skin becomes less elastic and these lines can become more obvious or permanent.

Botulinum toxin is injected directly into these muscles causing them to relax and thus smooth out those troublesome lines. This nonsurgical, quick and painless procedure leaves you with a more relaxed and youthful appearance lasting for 4-6 months.

Snoring

Is snoring making your life a misery? If so, help is at hand.

Snoring is a common problem which causes friction within many relationships but it is much more than a social problem: it may also be damaging your health. Simple snoring has been associated with high blood pressure, diabetes and hardening of the arteries.

Snoring is also a major symptom of a serious medical condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) which is associated with several serious health problems such as heart attack and stroke.

At Blairgowrie Dental Care we provide a screening service to all snorers and if OSA is suspected you will be referred for further investigation. If not, you will be offered treatment with a custom made oral device, which is considerably more effective than the 'boil and bite' devices that can be purchased via the internet.

This treatment can only be safely delivered by a dental practitioner who has received documented training in Dental Sleep Medicine.

At Blairgowrie Dental Care these treatments are carried out by two of our principle dentists Stewart McLean (trained in the Sleepwell Snoring appliance) and Neil Rutherford (trained at the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine).
